PANDEMIC WINNERS AND LOSERS I have regrettably been part of more than a few conversations recently where someone nonchalantly says something along the lines of, “in this pandemic, there are winners and there are losers.” Along with the off-putting smugness that accompanies the ability to say these words out loud (because it’s mostly winners who like to talk in these terms), declaring anyone a winner in this debacle seems nonsensical.
First of all you are an incredible writer. Loving this. I’m all for the idea of testing before dining. But... my last rapid test was $165 so... my next suggestion is we recruit Stacey Abrams. Can’t we lure her to LA for a short stint to get this mess cleaned up?!
I’m all for anything that would allow us to support independent restaurants. I’m just wondering if for young people the cost of Covid tests on top of a restaurant bill would make dining out prohibitive.
Beautiful post. Why not hold restaurants to the same standard as airlines and require patrons to provide proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours of dining? Not that I think this hurdle is particularly effective, but it seems equitable. It would also allow diners to select the tests that are covered by their insurance or by the state.
Thank you for highlighting an industry that has been so affected by the pandemic. Our Friday night dinner pick-ups from our local favorites is always fun as each of us gets a turn to choose a restaurant we not only love but want to consciously support their continued existence in our community. As far as a rapid test prior to dining goes...well the price would have to come way down! But I'm guessing that will not happen as those selling the test probably consider themselves the 'winners'?!
Thanks for shining the spotlight on this poor industry! It is so upsetting to see the people who work in that industry disparately shoulder the burden of the lockdown. I made a resolution for January to cook dinner more often but I quickly evolved my plan to include both more cooking and only ordering take out from independent restaurants where we know the owner or someone who works there. We don't want to lose these businesses! And I love the idea of a rapid test before dining! We would be all in with that plan!
